Nearly half of South Africa’s ministers are women, the highest proportion in Africa, but the percentage falls very fast – women ministers are 20% or higher in just 10 countries, in this dataset of 36 African countries.
41% of women in Togo and Uganda say they have an unmet need for contraceptives; in Egypt and Morocco, it’s 10%. In the majority of African countries, the proportion is a quarter to a third.
The index measures the gender-based gap in a country’s economic opportunity, education, political empowerment and health, independent of a country’s level of income or development.
The biggest education gaps between boys and girls is found is Chad, Mali and Benin; the narrowest in Lesotho, Botswana and Namibia.
