Nigeria, Ethiopia and Egypt have a combined 175 million people living in rural areas, but expressed as a percentage of the country’s population, Ethiopia has the largest rural population relative to the total.
The ranking is based on absolute numbers of people living in urban areas; on this measure Nigeria is tops with over 63 million people living in cities and towns.
Nearly nine out of ten people in Djibouti live in a city, Gabon is a close second at 85%. By contrast, just 13% of people in Uganda, and 11% in Burundi, live in urban areas.
