Ethiopia received $1.68 billion in foreign aid in 2004, DR Congo was a close second at $1.64 billion. Tanzania, Egypt and Ghana round out the top five.

For the first time in at least five years, Nigeria received a large chunk of foreign aid – $5.9 billion. This was the highest disbursement to an African country in 2005.

Nigeria received $10.8 billion in foreign aid in 2006, over nine times more than second placed Sudan. Cameroon, DR Congo and Zambia round out the top five.

In cumulative terms, Nigeria has received the biggest chunk of development/ foreign aid in the six years between 2000-2006, but this was largely driven by a huge spike in 2005 and 2006.

Egypt received $1.5 billion in foreign aid in 2000, followed by Tanzania and Mozambique at just over $1 billion. Uganda and Zambia round out the top five.
